We accumulate excessive amounts of food. Suddenly, we buy Swiss francs and euros. We terminate contracts and suspend payments due to others. These are atavistic behaviours employed in order to accumulate resources. They are to help us survive a catastrophe, crisis, sudden change. Most likely, the genome of Homo Sapiens tells us to do so.
