Krzysztof Tarka in an interview with Miroslaw Konkel for the September edition of Puls Biznesu: it is better to reject the headhunter’s proposal rather than to accept a role that is beyond us. However, only people with high self-awareness and humility can afford to refuse.
When choosing a job, we must be able to distinguish between three perspectives. The first consists of what a person already knows, what s/he has learned and what positive experiences s/he has had. The second is about our competences and talents, i.e. what our parents, genes and upbringing gave us. It is usually already clear at the age 14-15 when we have already matured socially and sexually. The third is the perspective of our ambitions, willingness to increase the scope of responsibility, reaching for more advanced functions. The problem is that people often confuse the first perspective with the third.
First of all, we should choose jobs that are mostly based on our existing knowledge, skills and experience. Secondly, those that correspond to our talents and competences: social, managerial, specialist, communication, etc. It is a guarantee that we will manage and succeed.
